Most seniors know that exercise has its benefits. It has been proven time and time again. But they may not know about an exercise class called Zumba, an upbeat exercise program that incorporates various dance steps and movements set to the rhythms of Latin and international music.
Zumba was initially introduced as an intense, fast-paced, high-calorie-burning workout. It produced great results, but was a little too intense for the older population, who found it intimidating and hard to keep up with. So the program was modified to accommodate the stamina and speed of seniors and active older adults – and the revised program is called Zumba Gold.
What Exactly is Zumba Gold?
Zumba Gold takes the original movements of the Zumba exercise program and modifies the pacing and movements to better suit beginning exercisers and older adults. Staying true to the original Zumba exercise program, it does not follow the typical aerobic style of 32 beats per movement, but rather follows the flow of the authentic music. Instructors are encouraged to choreograph the workouts within those parameters.
Zumba Gold incorporates various steps from dances such as the cha-cha, tango, salsa, merengue and belly dancing, and organizes it in an easy-to-follow workout. The program targets the arms, shoulders, hips and legs. The steps are simple and repetitive, and the arm and hip movements are gentle and slight.
A typical Zumba Gold class starts with a warm-up to loosen the muscles and joints, then proceeds to the dance and step routine, and ends with a cool down and stretch session. The whole routine is done to upbeat and lively Latin music.
Benefits of an Exercise Program
Regular exercise has many benefits for almost all older people, states the American Academy of Family Physicians. It improves mood, lowers chances for injury and protects the body from chronic disease. Medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, heart disease, colon cancer, obesity, and high blood pressure can be improved with exercise.
As with any exercise program, seniors should consult with their physicians before beginning Zumba Gold, to be sure it is right for them. It is generally a low-impact and total-body workout. Dance experience is not required, and chair-based options are available if needed.
Zumba Gold is a fun exercise class to do with a group of friends, and is offered at many local gyms, studios and senior centers. Seniors can sign up for a weekly class, or work it into the rotation with other favorite, low-impact exercise options such as swimming and walking.
And as we all know – no matter what age we are - exercise that is fun, enjoyable and shared with friends, is bound to be repeated.
